Principal's Announcement

Dear Rockwell Families,

It is with great sorrow that we are loosing Sayuri and our Japanese language program.  Sayuri’s husband has been transferred back to Japan.  We spent a month trying to find another certificated teacher to take over the program but alas to no avail.

Fortunately working with staff and using our contacts we were able to secure a certificated teacher who will instruct art.  The children in grades 3-5 will have an hour of art per week.  Audee Gregor, who has worked at Rockwell before, will start the week of Nov 12th.  She will coordinate with art docents so she is enhancing the already fine program we have here.

We are bummed to have lost our foreign language program but are thrilled enrichment activities will continue.  For those of you new to Rockwell, by teacher contract, I must provide 100 minutes of teacher planning time during the day per week.  In the past Rockwell did this by having children eat in the lunchroom for 20 minutes and then play outside for 30.  This gave the teachers a 30 minute lunch and 20 minutes planning per day.

Now that we’ve grown beyond capacity for our lunchroom, teachers in grades 3-5 supervise the children during the 20 minutes that was formally planning time.  As per contract the position must be enrichment, not a subject matter that is regularly taught by the classroom teacher.  Art fits the criteria and was the discipline chosen by the teachers.  I admit I’m relieved to have found such a great teacher.  Audee Gregor is a favorite at Rockwell.

In other news, fourteen of us are taking a writing class.  We are using the text, Units of Study by Lucy Calkins.  You may note that children in the primary grades are writing “to a tiny moment of time” this quarter.  This technique has children think of special times then “zoom in” to single scenes.  I’ve noted how detailed their sentences have become since we’ve had them so narrowly focused.

We had a great time Oct 26th and wish to thank you for your support.  While you had the day to enjoy your children, we were in school.  Mr. Corroone led us in math staff development, Mrs. Kirkman in language arts and Mr. Urben in technology.  Teachers had opportunities to take mini-classes at their level of expertise as well as work with colleagues.  The day ended with rave reviews.

Conferences are just around the corner.  Look for letters coming home from teachers as they prepare to schedule families.  Please note your day and time.  We don’t have much wiggle room so if you are late unfortunately you won’t get your full teacher time.  Let’s face it, we love hearing about our kiddos so take full advantage.

Tina Livingston,  loving the fall season
